This week I am sharing the wisdom of our friend, local Fitness and Health Coach Adam Murphy. Adam works with his clients to achieve a balanced and healthy lifestyle and takes a holistic approach to wellbeing. He also understands the brain fade many of us (exhibit A – right here) suffer from in the afternoons at work. Here’s how he suggests we combat it!

Something I hear daily from my clients, friends and family is: “I am tired”, “I am bored”, and of course.. “I need a coffee!!” Does this sound like something you or someone you know would say?

Whenever I hear someone say these words my first response is this: have you had enough fats today?..

Which of course is always followed by, “FATS??? But I don’t want to get fat!!”

Omega 3 fatty acid Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)is an important ingredient for optimal brain function. It is also what makes up most of our gray matter in our brains.

DHA is essential for brain cell membrane function, which is important for transmission of brain signals. Therefore a lack of the DHA (omega 3 fats) will cause a communication breakdown in the brain.

Most of us – who are busy people, with families, jobs, businesses, and other important things to do – cannot afford a communication breakdown within our brains (AKA – Brain fade).

So, “what do I need to do??!” I hear you ask?

Omega 3 fats are easy to come by, the best sources are:

Coconut oil

Chia seeds

Fish / fish oil / Krill oil

Nuts – walnuts

Plant Oils – olive, flax.

Plant based foods – Avocado

Hemp oil

These should be consumed over the whole day; my recommendation to consume them in every meal to make sure that you are fuelling your brain all day long at regular intervals.

So, next time you are looking for something to pep you up and give you that energy for the remainder of your day. Don’t reach for the coffee, or the chocolate bars. Reach for something that contains omega 3 fat and feel the difference in your mental clarity, concentration and memory.

So there you have it! Fat is the new Long Black. Happy productive eating 🙂
